FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

RECRUITMENT FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Formal Recruitment?

Formal Recruitment is an opportunity for PNMs to meet sisters in each chapter, learn more about each sorority, and choose where they belong. Formal recruitment also has a mutual selection process. It is the largest recruitment opportunity each chapter has during the school year. UNC Greensboro has Formal Recruitment in September of every year.

Is Recruitment only for freshman?

This is not true! Sorority recruitment is open and encouraged to all undergraduate students at UNC Greensboro. Most women decide to go through formal recruitment their freshman year, however, so they can have four full years in the chapter.

What if I am hesitant about going through Recruitment?

Still go through! No matter what, Formal Recruitment is a wonderful opportunity to meet a ton of new women at UNC Greensboro. You can form friends within your Pi Chi group, with your Pi Chis, or even with the sisters you meet while visiting each chapter. We encourage you to keep an open mind through out the whole week of recruitment- who knows you may surprise yourself and absolutely love it!

How do I choose a sorority?

Formal Recruitment is a mutual selection process. The most important thing for potential new members to remember is to keep an open mind. Every chapter wants to get to know you just as much as you want to get to know them. After each night of recruitment, you will narrow down your choice of the chapter you feel most at home with and want to join.

Will my grades suffer if I join a sorority?

That is a myth - actually most women’s grades go up! During recruitment, potential new members are required to meet the individual chapter’s GPA in order to join. The GPA requirements are as follows:

  • Alpha Chi Omega- 3.0

  • Alpha Delta Pi- 2.9

  • Chi Omega- 3.0

  • Sigma Sigma Sigma- 2.9

Once joining the chapter, members are required to maintain each chapter’s GPA requirement. Each chapter has individualized scholarship programs for every member to be successful in school as well.

What if I am worried about affording dues?

Don’t worry! During a new member’s first semester, chapter dues are always more expensive. This is because members have to pay one time fees, purchase their badge, and pay dues. However, after their first semester, dues are almost cut in half for members. Dues include all social events, individual chapter fees, but do not include chapter merchandise. Each chapter has a payment plan for active members that break down payments over the course of the semester as an option as well. There are also a ton of women who have jobs to pay for their own dues and find it perfectly manageable between working, being a Panhellenic woman, and a student. Click here to see the breakdown of each chapter's member dues.

Will I be able to be involved in other organizations on campus or have a job?

Yes! There are a ton of women in each chapter who handle their sorority, other on campus clubs or honor societies, and a job. Being in a sorority teaches you how to balance and manage your time, so many women find it completely doable to be a student, a Panhellenic woman, have a job, and a social life.

What if I decide I want to go through recruitment after formal recruitment has passed?

Many chapters participate in informal recruitment after formal recruitment is over, but that is not a guarantee. It is the chapter’s decision if it wishes to have informal recruitment. The main difference between informal and formal is not every chapter participates in it, which limits the PNM’s opportunity to meet every chapter. However, it is once again a great opportunity to join a sorority here at UNC Greensboro. You can contact the VP of Recruitment Hannah Stewart.
